Haku
HAKU HAS BEEN ADOPTED! –
Haku spent the first 8 years of his life as a breeder in a puppy mill, and was a then dumped at a shelter. Haku had no experience living in a home or interacting with humans, and didn’t know how to be a pet. We pulled him from the shelter and placed him in a foster home experienced with rehabilitating puppy mill survivors.
Kaitlin and Dylan have a 7 yr old Shiba, Lucy, who is also a puppy mill survivor. They understood how rewarding it is to watch a severely traumatized dog learn to trust, gain confidence, and experience joy for the first time. Recognizing how important it was for Lucy to have a buddy dog during her rehab, and knowing that their brother and his dog were moving out, it was time to adopt again. They were drawn to Haku because they knew they could help him and envisioned Lucy and Haku growing old together in peace, surrounded by love.
The meet and greets were very successful so Haku started his adoption trial. The reports from Kaitlin and Dylan assured us we had made the right choice for Haku. He and Lucy were immediately friends; they followed each other around and could be spotted playing with each other when they thought nobody was watching. He was enjoying the yard time and sunbathing next to Lucy. He was accepting petting from Kaitlin and Dylan, and even laid down next to Kaitlin after getting pets on day. His tail was up (a sign that he is relaxed) and he was choosing to spend more and more time outside of his safe place (his crate), sleeping in a dog bed. He wanted to say hello when our volunteer came for a visit and allowed petting from friends that came over. These all sound like not that big of a deal, but for a mill survivor, it’s a very big deal!
Kaitlin shared how much they loved seeing Lucy’s progress when they first got her, and to experience it again with Haku was such a gift! She described Haku as a kind, sweet, gentle boy who just needed a chance to be a dog! We couldn’t agree more and are so grateful to them for giving him the opportunity, and for showing him what it means to feel love and kindness. Congrats to Kaitlin, Dylan, Lucy and Haku.
