Ace

FOSTER FOUND! – 7 yr old male Shiba
Ace was taken to a shelter by his family because of his behavior towards their toddler. Not getting along with kids is the #1 reason that Shibas end up in rescue, but for Ace it’s not a matter of not liking kids. His family reports that he was fine with their daughter as she was growing up; just not their son. Based on the information we have; we see Ace as a dog who is starved for attention, and either a particularly unruly toddler (compared to his sister), or a dog who just doesn’t care for males (dog or human). We have a sneaking suspicion that Ace’s “behavior problems” will miraculously disappear in the right environment. That’s so often the case with rescue Shibas.
Ace is still in the shelter and we need to find a suitable foster, or foster-to-adopt, home in order to get him out ASAP! To be on the safe side, we are looking for a home, preferably with no kids, or only female children who are old enough, and experienced enough, to be respectful of him. This requirement may change as we get to know him better in rescue.
Ace has lived with dogs. He seems to prefer smaller female dogs. Ace has lived with cats and loves them! We have reason to believe that he may be a resource guarder, but we won’t know for sure until he is out of the shelter and we get to know him better. To be safe, he would do best in a home with either no dogs, or with smaller female dogs that are not resource guarders, and are more laidback; not so bossy.
Ace is house trained and crate trained. He has not been crated regularly in a while, but goes in willingly and may need it as a ‘safe space’ to retreat to in his new home if he’s feeling anxious or overwhelmed.
He is accustomed to a home with a yard. He is a “bolter” and has been know to escape out of doors and windows, given the opportunity. Fosters will need to be diligent and pro-active to keep him safe. He is reportedly good on leash. He is very friendly with shelter staff. He loves to play chase and tug-o-war.
