Azuki

ON ADOPTION TRIAL: 3 yr old male Shiba – $350 adoption fee
Azuki ‘s family could not offer him the stable home or the attention he deserves, so COSIR offered to help. He grieved for his previous humans, but is now doing really well in foster care. His foster has given him a new name to go with his new & improved life. Azuki means ‘red bean’ in Japanese, and he already responds to it.
Azuki very much enjoys having another Shiba in his foster home. They will play with each other, and are quite rambunctious and joyful! He is also content to spend hours sleeping and watching the world go by; he is a very curious boy. He’s done well being around kids as young as three, and is gentle. Azuki has not lived with cats, but has a non-aggressive curiosity of them when spotted on his walks on a number of occasions.
At just 3 yrs old, he has patellar luxation in both knees (likely due to poor puppy mill/online/back yard breeding practices. 🙁) He is a bit overweight, putting too much strain on his knees. He’s now eating a much better kibble with fresh foods added to help him in losing weight. He is now getting regular exercise to build up his leg muscles, and his increased energy level is noticeable. He will be in tip top shape in no time; he is not in pain, does not need meds, and is able to jump up in the couch in one effortless go – but will almost certainly suffer from some level of arthritis later in life, so a home without a lot of stairs to navigate is best.
We suspect playing fetch was Azuki’s only previous activity. He’s already trained his foster dad to throw the ball incessantly on demand, something most Shiba parents are NOT familiar with. 😉 A home with a yard would suit him best, so he can continue to play fetch, abnd keep him active and losing weight while he builds his strength and stamina for longer walks. Azuki is house trained. He is crate trained, but hasn’t sought out the crate at the fosters, and has not shown any adverse behavior when left loose while home alone.
Azuki is an absolute sweetheart and truly a calm and gentle soul. He loves attention and comes up with adorable ways to get it; like pulling your socks off from the toe as you try to put them on! He is shameless when it comes to asking for head rubs, and loves being brushed. Whoever adopts him is going to be very fortunate to have him for a best friend. He is very smart and learns quickly. He will do well in his post-adoption training, but has already picked up a few basi commands in his foster home; “Wait”, “Sit” and “Come”. He’s even learned to sit and wait until he is invited to eat his meals!
Azuki has an appointment to be neutered, and a bad tooth pulled, in preparation for adoption. If you are interested in Azuki, please complete our online Adoption Application.
