Chiyo
COURTESY POST – (Dog is in WA):
10 yr old female Shiba – no kids, no pets –
Chiyo lived with a breeder her first 6 years, before being adopted. At the breeder’s she often fought with other dogs, and almost lost an eye at one point. This has effected her vision in that eye, so understandably, she is sensitive to how she is approached and handled. Her current human has decided to rehome. They live in WA state. We are accepting applications on her owner’s behalf, and referring good candidates for a private adoption.
Chiyo is in good health; full of spunk and energy. She loves tug-o-war and being chased! She needs extra time to trust and warm up to new people, but once she builds trust she is fine. She would be a great companion dog for a single person, or couple, with no kids, or plan for kids in her lifetime. She would love to be the center of attention, and the queen of her home. A quiet home with a predictable routine and not too much activity or visitors would be best.
Chiyo is reactive to other dogs, and needs an adopter who understands and is willing to avoid them. Chiyo lives in an apartment and is accustomed to 3 walks a day; one of them being a longer one. She could continue to live in an apartment, but would do best in an community where she doesn’t have to pass by other dogs in tight spaces, like narrow hallways or elevators.
Chiyo has not lived with, or been tested, with cats, but given that she is a resource guarder (guards her person), she would do best as the only pet. She should not live with, or socialize with children.
Chiyo’s guarding is likely a symptom of the anxiety that comes from the how vulnerable she feels with limited sight. Ideally, her adopter will have some experience with dogs with a sight impairments, guarding, or dog reactivity, but it is not required as long as you’re open to learning about how to manage these things.
If you meet the requirements for Chiyo, and are in WA state or willing to travel to adopt, please complete an adoption application on our website. If you are already on our waitlist, you can simply reach out to let us know you’re interested at adopt@coshibarescue.org or call/text 720-491-1278.
