CINDY HAS BEEN ADOPTED –
Cindy has been adopted after 813 days in rescue! Cindy, a Shiba/Chow mix, was about 4 when she was found stray. Her family didn’t want her and explained her deformed leg was broken when she fell off a roof! Without any medical attention, it healed improperly. Sadly, this was not her biggest problem. Cindy was heartworm positive. The treatment is long and painful and would be particularly hard on Cindy. Having never known human kindness, she was fearful and wouldn’t permit any handling. It would not be easy to treat her.
Karen had lost her 2nd Shiba to old age and was looking to adopt. At the time we didn’t have any older dogs appropriate for an active youthful 80 year old, so we suggested she foster while she waited for the right dog to come. When she heard Cindy’s story, she was compelled to help. Over time, Karen built trust and Cindy learned that there are good humans in the world. She got Cindy comfortable wearing a harness, walking on leash, and going for car rides. Cindy was ready to begin treatment. Despite her love for Karen, Cindy was still weary of others. After her first visit to the vet, she was so traumatized, subsequent attempts to get her in for treatment failed. We eventually found a mobile vet and after some trial and error with different sedatives, we were finally able to administer the awful injections needed.
Despite almost a year of treatment, Cindy still tested positive for heartworm. Thankfully, after a few more months of treatment, she finally tested negative! We’d been advised not to operate on her leg, given how old the injury was, and how invasive and traumatic it would be for Cindy. She already has a good quality of life living with her handicap. Cindy was finally ready for adoption! By this time, Cindy & Karen were an inseparable and adorable pair. Karen was afraid we’d refuse to adopt Cindy to her, due to her age. But there’s no way we’d take Cindy away from her or deny Cindy the love of the first human to ever care about her and treat her right. These 2 were meant to be together and knowing Karen’s daughter also has a special loving relationship with Cindy, she will always have a home; come what may. Congrats to Cindy & Karen!
