Kira
COURTESY POST: Approx. 10 yr old female, possible Shiba/Basenji mix –
Kira’s family adopted her from a shelter when she was approx 1-2 years old. She had already been adopted and returned 3 times, and they couldn’t stand the idea that she be rehomed again or put down. Kira kept being returned because she has severe separation anxiety. Her current family has managed to adapt their life for the last several years so that she is never left home alone. However, they now have 2 children, and their lives have become increasingly busier. It’s reached a point where it’s become impossible to continue to give her a home where someone is always home. They want to ensure she goes to a good home, and asked for our help.
Kira currently lives in California, but her family is able to bring her to Colorado to meet potential adopters. We are looking for adopters in CA or CO, or willing to make a trip to CA or CO. They ask that we screen potential adopters for them. We will put qualified adopters in direct contact with Kira’s family to do a private adoption. Kira’s family has noticed that she does much better at their parent’s home with a yard, vs. their apartment, no kids, and a quiet environment.
Unfortunately, her family was duped by a self proclaimed “behaviorist” who told them to use a shock collar and electrified mat on Kira. No certified, licensed behaviorist would ever recommend such inhumane tactics. The use of these things just made poor Kira more fearful and anxious and now that there are kids in the picture, they don’t have the time to devote to training.
We are looking for adopters who are in a position to adapt to Kira’s needs. This means someone who is able to have someone home all the time, and /or able to take Kira with them when they go out. She cannot be crated. With enough time and commitment to positive reinforcement training for separation anxiety, Kira will improve over time.
