Norman

Approx. 10 yr old male Shiba
Norman was picked up stray and taken to a shelter. He was adopted out and returned a few days later. Therefore, the shelter felt best that he go to a rescue that understands the breed and can do the proper screening of applicants. We found a fantastic foster home for him, and they plan to adopt.
Not surprisingly, Norman is quite anxious in the shelter environment, and still hurting from his neuter and dental, so he was aloof with our volunteers who went to meet and assess him. He did end up accepting and enjoying some pets from them after some time. Once outside of the scary shelter, and completely healed, he is going to show his true personality. Shelter staff describe him as sweet, but independent, and silly. We think he may even have potential to be a somewhat cuddly Shiba!
Norman was tested with dogs in the shelter and did well. Although, he did try to mount/hump the other dog. This is not surprising for a dog that was still intact until recently. It’s likely that once the testosterone is completely out of his system, this behavior will subside. However, it is also possible that at his age it is a learned behavior and will continue. If he is to live with other dogs, it will need to be one that is very tolerant.
Norman was tested with cats in the shelter and did not seem particularly interested. His experience with kids is unknown. He would likely appreciate a calm, quiet home to retire to. His behavior in the shelter, plus the fact that he was picked up stray, may indicate that he is an escape artist. If he is going to live in a home with a yard, it will require very secure fencing.
Based on his weight, coat, and movements, he appears to be in good shape and well cared for up until now. He seems to have lots of energy and wants to explore. He just needs the right humans to love and go on adventures with!
