Ringo
8 yr old male Shiba – NO DOGS – NO KIDS – NO APTS/CONDOS:
Ringo was found stray and taken to a shelter. He is estimated at 8 yrs old, but this boy has lots of energy! We suspect that he was banished to the outdoors and was never socialized to people or dogs. He never learned what it is to be somebody’s pet and live in a home. As a result, he is a fearful boy, but warms up to humans quickly if they give him the time and space he needs to trust them. Once he trusts you, he seeks out affection and wants to be near you. He will need an adopter who has experience with fearful dogs.
He is not sure how to behave around other dogs, but is not reactive to them unless they are getting attention from his foster mom. In a home with no other dogs, we can focus on building his confidence. He may be able to socialize with other dogs outside of his home someday, but needs to be the only dog at home.
A few side effect of his unfortunate past, include confinement anxiety, a fear of passing through doors & doggy doors, and alert and demand barking. For these reasons, he would not do well in an apartment or condo. He will likely always have confinement anxiety, so no crates for him. With consistent positive reinforcement training, and time in a stable home, these things will subside. He is house trained. He has not been tested with cats.
Ringo is a taller/larger Shiba than most. He weighs about 42 lbs, yet he could stand to gain a few more. He may be a mix, but larger Shibas are becoming more common with so many puppy mills breeding them to meet demand.
