Smokie
1 yr old male Shiba / Schipperke mix:
Smokie was taken to a shelter by his family because he was being destructive in the home and escaping out of open doors. They claimed to not have the appropriate time or space for him. His ‘bad’ behaviors are a symptom of a dog not getting enough training, socialization, mental stimulation, and exercise. He is a bit reactive to some dogs and strangers, and did not tolerate handling very well. Smokie’s excited head tilt and circling in the shelter lead them to believe he had Vestibular Syndrome, and thought the place for him would be in rescue.
We have not seen any indications of Vestibular Syndrome since bringing Smokie into rescue, but are having him seen by the vet to confirm a diagnosis, in addition to the usual wellness exam.
Smokie has been placed in a foster-to-adopt home selected from our adoption waitlist. The foster plans to adopt him once he has been given a clean bill of health by the vet. We are also taking our time and working on Smokies fearful reaction to strangers and some dogs.
